A life-threatening medical emergency has transformed into a powerful story of awareness and preparedness after a teenager from Westgate-on-Sea survived a sudden cardiac arrest caused by an undiagnosed condition.
Hayden collapsed at home in January, with his mother, Stacey, quickly realizing something was seriously wrong when she found him unresponsive and breathing abnormally. Her instinct to call emergency services immediately proved critical, as paramedics arrived within minutes and began intensive resuscitation efforts.
The response team acted swiftly, performing CPR and delivering multiple defibrillator shocks before successfully restoring Hayden’s heartbeat. He was later treated in hospital, where doctors discovered an underlying congenital heart condition that had gone unnoticed until the incident.
While the event was traumatic, it has led to important changes for the family. Relatives are now undergoing heart screenings, highlighting how such conditions can remain hidden without testing. Inspired by the experience, Hayden’s mother and sister have also taken CPR training, equipping themselves with the skills that helped save his life.
Now recovered and back to his daily routine, Hayden’s story underscores the importance of early intervention, awareness of cardiac health, and the life-saving impact of rapid emergency response. For the paramedics involved, seeing his recovery has provided a rare and meaningful reminder of the difference their work makes beyond the moment of crisis.
