Human rights lawyer and activist Sarah Bireete has argued that the scrutiny surrounding Anita Annet Among goes beyond individual misconduct and instead reflects deeper structural problems in Uganda’s political system.
According to Bireete, the controversy facing the Speaker highlights a recurring trend where leaders rapidly rise to powerful positions without adequate preparation, mentorship, or strong institutional values. She said the situation reveals weaknesses in how public officials are identified, nurtured, and held accountable once they attain office.
Bireete noted that while allegations of corruption and ethical misconduct have put Among under intense public and international scrutiny, the broader concern should be the political culture that enables such patterns to repeat themselves. She argued that leadership in Uganda has increasingly become centered on loyalty and political survival rather than competence, integrity, and public service.
The activist further stressed that without deliberate investment in ethical leadership development and stronger democratic institutions, similar scandals will continue to emerge across government. She called for reforms aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and merit-based leadership within the country’s political system.
Her remarks add to the growing national debate over governance, accountability, and the standards expected of public officialsin Uganda.
