Parliament has intensified its oversight of Uganda’s transport and infrastructure sector, with lawmakers demanding answers from the Ministry of Works and Transport over stalled road projects, worsening road safety, and persistent flooding in Kampala.
The Committee on Physical Infrastructure has summoned Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama to appear before it on Tuesday, accompanied by senior ministry technocrats, to account for more than 28 road projects reportedly abandoned by contractors across the country.
Committee Chairperson and Mbarara South MP Mwine Mpaka said the unfinished projects have disrupted transport, slowed service delivery, and raised concerns about the government’s management of critical infrastructure investments.
Beyond the stalled roads, lawmakers are seeking a detailed report on the increasing number of road crashes, which continue to claim lives across Uganda. The committee wants the ministry to outline concrete measures being implemented to improve road safety and reduce fatalities.
The committee has also expanded its oversight to the Uganda Railways Corporation, where it plans to investigate allegations that land belonging to the corporation has been illegally taken over by influential individuals.
Attention will also shift to Kampala’s recurring flooding challenges. On Wednesday, the committee is scheduled to meet officials from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to assess ongoing interventions aimed at improving drainage and mitigating floods that continue to disrupt businesses and communities during heavy rains.
