KAMPALA — Construction of a new Karuma Bridge along the Kampala–Gulu Highway is expected to commence within the next few months, marking a major milestone in the government’s efforts to improve Uganda’s transport infrastructure.
The new bridge is intended to replace the existing crossing and enhance the safety and efficiency of one of the country’s busiest transport corridors, which links Kampala to Northern Uganda and serves as a key trade route within the East African region.
According to officials, the project is expected to improve the movement of people and goods, reduce travel disruptions and strengthen regional connectivity by providing a modern and more reliable crossing over the River Nile at Karuma.
The bridge forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure development programme aimed at supporting economic growth through improved road networks and transport services.
Once completed, the new structure is expected to boost trade, facilitate cross-border commerce and improve access to markets for businesses operating in Northern Uganda and neighbouring countries.
Authorities have indicated that additional details regarding the project’s scope of works, implementation schedule and other technical aspects will be released as construction preparations progress.
The development is expected to further strengthen Uganda’s strategic transport network and enhance connectivity between the central and northern regions of the country while supporting regional integration within East Africa.
