Allies Rally Behind Anita Among, Decry “Media Trials” and Call for Due Process
Supporters of Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon. Annet Anita Among have come out strongly in her defense amid mounting public and political scrutiny, warning against what they describe as “trial by media” and politically motivated attacks.
In a statement issued Thursday, a pressure group identifying itself as “Friends of the Rt Hon. Annet Anita Among” appealed for calm and respect for constitutional principles as questions continue to surround the Speaker’s office and conduct.
The group said the growing public discourse around Among risks undermining the rule of law if handled through speculation and political hostility rather than established legal procedures.
“AAA is innocent until proven guilty or admits any wrongdoing,” the statement emphasized, urging Ugandans and state institutions to uphold fairness and natural justice.
The allies also appealed to President Yoweri Museveni to ensure that the Speaker receives impartial treatment, describing him as a leader committed to the rule of law and constitutional governance.
Without directly addressing the allegations or controversies facing Among, the group criticized what it called “sensationalized media narratives” and “political witch-hunts” allegedly aimed at weakening her leadership and influence within government.
The statement further praised Among’s tenure as Bukedea Woman MP and Speaker, highlighting her role in grassroots mobilization, development initiatives, and parliamentary leadership.
“She has historically served the nation with distinction and continues her dedicated service,” the statement noted, adding that her resilience and leadership experience would help her weather the current political storm.
Among remains one of the most influential figures within the ruling NRM government, having retained her Bukedea Woman MP seat during the 2026 general elections while continuing to serve as Speaker of the 11th Parliament.
The statement concludes with a call for unity, restraint, and adherence to due process as scrutiny surrounding the Speaker intensifies.
