KIKUBA VILLAGE, RUBIRIZI DISTRICT — Residents of Kikuba Village in Ndekye Ward, Rubirizi District, are celebrating the commissioning of a new clean water source expected to improve access to safe water and reduce the challenges that families have faced for years.
The project, valued at more than UGX 6 million, was supported by Bunyaruguru Member of Parliament Hon. Cadet Benjamin Buturo and is aimed at addressing persistent water shortages that have affected households in the area.
Community members described the project as a major relief, noting that many families previously depended on water collected from Lake Kigezi and other distant sources. The situation often forced women and children to walk long distances in search of water, affecting household productivity and school attendance.
Residents led by Tumwesigye Mangara and Kasande Merab welcomed the initiative, saying it will significantly improve daily life and reduce the risks associated with using unsafe water sources.
Local leaders also highlighted the broader impact the project is expected to have on the community. Hon. Tugume Muzafaru said access to clean water will contribute to better health and sanitation while supporting small-scale agricultural activities that many households depend on for income.
He encouraged residents to take responsibility for protecting and maintaining the facility to ensure it serves future generations.
Speaking during the commissioning, Hon. Buturo reaffirmed his commitment to supporting development initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods across Bunyaruguru. He noted that access to clean and safe water remains a priority and pledged to continue working with stakeholders and development partners to address remaining challenges in underserved communities.
The new water source adds to ongoing efforts to expand essential services in the constituency, with residents expressing hope that similar projects will be extended to other areas still facing water shortages.
Community elders and local leaders described the development as a significant step toward improving living conditions and promoting sustainable growth in Rubirizi District.
