KAMPALA — Media personality Joan Mulungi has spoken publicly about the emotional toll of her failed marriage to journalist Gabriel Buule, revealing that the separation drove her to contemplate suicide on four occasions.
Mulungi made the remarks during an interview with Sanyuka TV, where she described the breakdown of her marriage as one of the most difficult experiences of her life.
The couple exchanged vows on April 11, 2024, and had often publicly supported each other through personal challenges and criticism on social media. However, their relationship later came under intense public scrutiny after reports of their separation emerged online.
According to Mulungi, the events that followed left her emotionally devastated, causing her to lose her sense of self as social media discussions about the separation intensified.
“There is a day I will never forget when I cried for 36 hours. The only time I stopped crying was when I fell asleep midway through it. Every time I woke up, I remembered that I had problems and started crying again,” she said.
Mulungi disclosed that the pressure surrounding the separation, coupled with the widespread public attention, led her to consider taking her own life several times.

She said one of her greatest concerns was the impact the controversy had on her family, particularly her parents, whom she described as private individuals.
“I kept picturing the parents who struggled to raise me seeing everything that was being said in the media. My parents are private people, but watching all those things on the internet made me question who I was,” she said.

Mulungi added that friends and relatives repeatedly asked her how the situation had deteriorated, but she struggled to explain what had gone wrong.
“The people who know me kept asking how we got there and what we were going to do, but I just asked them to extend grace because I did not know how it got there,” she said.
She also expressed concern for her father, whom she described as emotionally sensitive.
“My mother is a strong woman, but I was worried about my father. He is weak like me and we cry easily. We cannot handle problems,” she added.
Meanwhile, Buule, in a recent interview, disclosed that the couple is in the final stages of formally dissolving their marriage through the courts of law.
The couple’s separation has continued to attract public debate, with Mulungi appealing for understanding and compassion as they navigate the difficult chapter in their lives.
