SHOCKING: Ibanda records seven murder cases in less than a month, 20 suspects held

By Karim Were

IBANDA. Authorities in Ibanda District have raised concern over a reported increase in murder cases, with at least seven people killed in less than a month and about 20 suspects currently in police custody.

Ibanda Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Godfrey Mbetegyereize said the security agencies were investigating the reported cases to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and identify those responsible.

The reported increase has heightened concern among residents and authorities, who fear that continued violent crime could undermine peace and security in the district if its underlying causes are not addressed.

Mbetegyereize said the seven reported murder cases had been registered within a period of less than one month, describing the situation as a concern requiring cooperation between security agencies, local leaders and members of the public.

We have registered about seven cases of murder in less than a month, and we have around 20 suspects in custody in connection with these cases,” Mbetegyereize said.

The RDC’s remarks indicate that investigations have resulted in a significant number of arrests, although the suspects’ identities, the individual circumstances of the cases and the specific charges they may face were not provided.

#Alcohol and drug abuse blamed

Mbetegyereize attributed part of the reported increase in violent crime to drug abuse and excessive consumption of locally brewed alcoholic drinks, particularly among young people.

He said substance abuse can contribute to risky behaviour and conflicts within communities, creating conditions in which disputes can escalate into violence.

However, the RDC’s explanation represents an assessment of factors contributing to the reported crime and does not establish that alcohol or drug use was responsible for each of the seven murder cases.

The authorities have not released details linking specific suspects or victims to particular substances.

The concern over substance abuse nevertheless forms part of a broader security and community welfare challenge, particularly where excessive drinking contributes to disputes, disorder or other forms of risky behaviour.

Mbetegyereize warned that continued alcohol and drug abuse could make it more difficult for authorities and communities to maintain peace.

He urged parents and community leaders to take a more active role in monitoring young people and addressing behaviour that could expose them to violence or criminal activity.

#Security agencies investigate

The RDC said security agencies were continuing to investigate the reported murders.

The investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine the involvement, if any, of the people currently in custody.

The number of suspects in custody is not equivalent to the number of people who will ultimately face trial or be convicted. Police investigations and subsequent court proceedings will determine whether sufficient evidence exists to prosecute individual suspects.

The authorities have also not indicated whether all seven cases are connected or whether they occurred under similar circumstances.

That distinction will be important in determining whether the reported incidents represent a related pattern of violence or separate criminal cases occurring within the same period.

For now, security agencies are expected to continue gathering evidence and obtaining information that can help establish what happened in each case.

#Community cooperation urged

Mbetegyereize called for stronger cooperation between residents, local leaders and security agencies, saying members of the public have an important role in preventing and reporting crime.

He encouraged residents to report suspicious activities and provide information to local leaders and security authorities promptly.

We need the cooperation of the community, local leaders and security agencies to address these challenges. People should not remain silent when they see suspicious activities because security is a shared responsibility,” he said.

The appeal places emphasis on community participation in crime prevention, particularly in identifying suspicious behaviour before it develops into more serious incidents.

Residents can also assist investigations by providing information about incidents they have witnessed, while avoiding interference with potential crime scenes or spreading unverified information about suspects and victims.

#Role of parents and local leaders

The RDC’s call for parents to become more involved in monitoring young people reflects the authorities’ concern about alcohol and drug abuse.

Parents, community leaders and other stakeholders can play a role in identifying risky behaviour and encouraging young people to seek constructive activities and support.

Mbetegyereize specifically urged stakeholders to address behaviours that could contribute to violence.

The call also places responsibility beyond the police, recognising that preventing violent crime involves several institutions and community actors.

Local leaders can support security agencies by encouraging residents to report crime and by helping address disputes before they escalate. At the same time, police and other security agencies remain responsible for investigating reported crimes and ensuring that suspects are handled according to the law.

#Need for accurate information

As investigations continue, authorities face the task of establishing the facts in each of the reported murder cases.

Information about the identities of the victims, locations of the incidents, suspected motives and circumstances surrounding each death has not been provided.

Such details are important for understanding whether the cases share common characteristics and for determining the appropriate response.

Until investigations are completed, allegations against individual suspects should not be treated as established facts.

The suspects currently in custody are entitled to due process and are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a competent court.

Similarly, any claims about the causes of individual murders should be based on evidence from investigations rather than assumptions arising from the broader concerns raised by authorities.

#Security and public responsibility

The reported cases have placed renewed attention on the relationship between community safety and public cooperation with security agencies.

Effective crime prevention requires timely reporting, preservation of evidence and cooperation with investigators. Residents who witness suspicious activity can provide information that may help authorities prevent crimes or identify suspects after an incident.

At the same time, authorities have a responsibility to ensure that investigations are conducted professionally and that suspects’ rights are respected throughout the process.

The involvement of local leaders is also important because they are often among the first points of contact for residents who have information about security concerns.

Mbetegyereize’s remarks therefore represent a call for a coordinated approach involving households, communities, local government and security agencies.

#Investigations remain ongoing

The reported seven murder cases within less than a month have prompted concern among Ibanda authorities, with about 20 suspects in custody as investigations continue.

The arrests represent an important stage in the investigations, but they do not by themselves establish responsibility for the reported deaths.

Investigators will need to establish the facts surrounding each case, examine available evidence and determine whether the suspects should be charged before court.

Authorities are also expected to continue addressing the concerns surrounding alcohol and drug abuse that the RDC identified as contributing factors to violent behaviour.

For residents, the immediate priority remains maintaining vigilance, reporting suspicious activity and cooperating with security agencies while avoiding speculation and the circulation of unverified information.

The developments in Ibanda underline the importance of a coordinated response to violent crime. As investigations proceed, the findings of security agencies and any subsequent court proceedings will provide a clearer picture of the circumstances behind the reported murders and determine accountability where evidence supports prosecution.
