The Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) today convened a stakeholders’ sensitisation workshop on migration management in the Karamoja sub-region, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration through strengthened multi-sectoral collaboration.
The workshop was presided over by the Ag. Commissioner for Borders and Foreign Nationals Management, Mr. Bwesigye Marcelino, and officially opened by the Mayor of Moroto Municipality, Hon. Mark Ssire.
In his keynote address, Hon. Ssire commended the Directorate for engaging stakeholders on migration governance, emphasizing that effective migration management is a shared responsibility requiring coordinated action among government agencies, local governments, security institutions, civil society, cultural leaders, and communities.
The Ag. Commissioner highlighted the importance of enhancing awareness of migration policies, strengthening inter-agency coordination, and equipping stakeholders with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to evolving migration dynamics, particularly in border communities.
Participants discussed migration trends in the Karamoja sub-region, existing challenges, and opportunities for strengthening collaboration in border management, information sharing, and community engagement. The workshop also reinforced the need to promote legal migration pathways while safeguarding national security and protecting the rights of migrants.
The sensitisation forms part of the Directorate’s ongoing efforts to strengthen migration governance and foster partnerships that contribute to peace, security, and sustainable development in Uganda’s border regions.
