KAMPALA —The Uganda Police Force has launched investigations into a shooting incident in which a boda boda rider was allegedly shot dead by a police officer during a National Cleaning Day community exercise in Ndejje Kanaaba, within Katwe Police Division.
The incident occurred on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at about 7:30am, according to preliminary information released by police.
Police said officers from Ndejje Police Station had been deployed to provide security during the National Cleaning Day community exercise in the area.
Preliminary findings indicate that the boda boda rider allegedly attempted to force his way through a secured area while riding his motorcycle.
In circumstances that are now under investigation, the rider was allegedly shot by Police Constable Allan Okello, an officer attached to Ndejje Police Station.
The rider later died from the injuries sustained in the shooting, police said.
#Officer arrested
Police said PC Okello has since been arrested as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Investigators are expected to establish what led to the confrontation, whether the use of the firearm was justified and the circumstances under which the officer discharged his weapon.
Police have not yet publicly released the identity of the deceased rider.
The incident occurred as communities across the country participated in the National Cleaning Day exercise, with security personnel deployed in several areas to maintain order and support the activities.
#Investigations underway
Police said investigations have commenced and are expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The inquiry is likely to focus on accounts from witnesses, the actions of the officer before the shooting and other evidence from the scene.
The circumstances under which the boda boda rider allegedly attempted to enter the secured area are also expected to form part of the investigation.
Police said further details would be released as investigations progress.
The shooting has drawn attention to the conduct of security personnel deployed during public and community activities, particularly the circumstances under which firearms are used.
The outcome of the investigations will determine whether any further action will be taken against the officer.
For now, the Uganda Police Force has confirmed that the officer involved has been taken into custody as inquiries continue.
