Uganda has taken another step in broadening its international partnerships following the appointment of Anita Rukundo Tayebwa as the Honorary Consul of The Bahamas in Uganda.
Rukundo Tayebwa, who is also the wife of Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, will serve as a key link between Uganda and the Caribbean island nation, helping to deepen cooperation in trade, tourism, investment and cultural exchange.
The honorary role places her at the center of efforts to strengthen relations between the two Commonwealth countries at a time when Uganda is increasingly seeking new global partnerships beyond traditional allies.
Honorary consuls typically play a strategic role in connecting governments and private sectors, supporting citizens abroad, attracting investors and promoting diplomatic engagement. Analysts say the appointment could open new opportunities for Ugandan businesses and tourism stakeholders looking toward Caribbean markets.
The announcement attracted praise from several prominent Ugandans, with many describing the appointment as well deserved.
Alan Kasujja, Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, congratulated her and reflected on his experience in The Bahamas during the Afreximbank Annual Meetings.
Media personality Andrew Kyamagero described her as “a deserving character,” while academician William Bazeyo said the AFROHUN family was proud of her achievement.
Former GCIC deputy executive director Duncan Abigaba also welcomed the appointment, expressing optimism about stronger cooperation between the two nations.
Political commentator Agaba Ronald Bills noted that Uganda and The Bahamas share historical ties through the Commonwealth and said the current generation has an opportunity to build stronger people-to-people and economic relations.
Uganda and The Bahamas have maintained cordial diplomatic relations through multilateral platforms, with both countries participating in global conversations on climate change, trade and development financing.
Known for its thriving tourism sector and offshore financial services industry, The Bahamas could present new avenues for cooperation with Uganda in investme
nt and tourism promotion.
