What started as a UGX 1 million investment through the Parish Development Model (PDM) has grown into a thriving enterprise that is creating jobs, improving livelihoods, and inspiring entrepreneurship in Rakai District.
During a field visit to Lwebiriba Village, Kakiri Parish in Kacheera Sub-County, District Coordinator Mr. Bukenya John met Ms. Nansamba Prossy, whose remarkable journey demonstrates how access to capital, combined with determination and sound business decisions, can transform lives.
Upon receiving UGX 1 million under the Government of Uganda’s Parish Development Model, Ms. Prossy carefully planned how to maximize the opportunity. She invested in a fishing boat and quality fishing nets, establishing a fishing business that supplies fresh fish to local markets. At the same time, she diversified her income by setting up a bar business within the community.
Today, both ventures are thriving. Her fishing operation and bar business have created employment opportunities for six people—three working in fisheries and three in the hospitality sector. These jobs have become a reliable source of income for six households, contributing to improved livelihoods and economic activity within the area.
The success of Ms. Prossy’s enterprises has not only transformed her family’s circumstances but has also benefited the wider community. Increased access to fresh fish, local employment opportunities, and a vibrant social and business hub have strengthened the local economy and improved community well-being.
Speaking during the visit, Mr. Bukenya John noted that Ms. Prossy’s story reflects the intended impact of the Parish Development Model.
“Her progress demonstrates how strategic government interventions can empower individuals to build sustainable businesses, create employment, and contribute to local economic development,” he said.
For Ms. Prossy and her family, the businesses have provided financial stability, enabling them to meet household needs, support their children’s education, and continuously reinvest in growth. What began as a single government grant has evolved into a diversified and sustainable source of income.
Looking ahead, Ms. Prossy has ambitious plans for expansion. She intends to acquire an additional fishing boat to increase production, invest in cold storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses, and renovate her bar to accommodate a growing customer base. She also hopes to mentor fellow women entrepreneurs in business management and value addition within the fisheries sector.
According to Ms. Prossy, the PDM funds provided the foundation for her success, but hard work, discipline, and smart decision-making have driven her progress.
“PDM money was my starting point. Through hard work and wise investment, I have been able to build a better future for my family and contribute to my community,” she said.
Her story continues to serve as an inspiring example of how government support, when effectively utilized, can create lasting prosperity, generate employment, and drive grassroots economic transformation.
