KAMPALA— An independent candidate, Juma Umaru, has been elected Local Council I (LC I) chairperson for Kibuli Kanakulya Zone after defeating the incumbent in a peaceful election.
Official results showed Umaru garnered *168 votes**, beating the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate and incumbent, Silver, who secured **129 votes**. National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Kaluba Amisi received **four votes**.
According to information from the polling area, the election was conducted peacefully, with residents participating in the voting process without major incidents.
Observers at the scene said Umaru’s victory was bolstered by an alliance with fellow independent candidate Hifude Issa, a move that consolidated support and contributed to the defeat of the incumbent.
Following the announcement of the results, the NUP candidate reportedly expressed interest in serving in the zone leadership and requested to be considered for a position on the local council cabinet.
Residents welcomed the peaceful conduct of the election, describing it as a demonstration of democratic participation at the grassroots level.
The LC I elections form part of ongoing efforts to elect village leaders who are responsible for coordinating community affairs, mobilising residents and supporting the implementation of government programmes at the local level.
