Uganda Inflation Rises to 4.1% as Food and Transport Costs Come Under Scrutiny

KAMPALA. Uganda’s annual headline inflation rose to 4.1% in August 2026, up from 4.0% in July, according to the latest Consumer Price Index released by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS). The increase, announced on August 31, provides a fresh indicator of the pressure on household budgets and business operating costs as the economy continues to expand.

The latest figure is the main development in this finance story. It is important because inflation measures the change in the prices of goods and services over time, helping households, businesses and policymakers assess changes in the cost of living.

Inflation edges higher

The August increase was modest, but it marked a reversal of the decline recorded between June and July. UBOS reported that annual inflation stood at 3.7% in June 2026 before rising to 4.0% in July and 4.1% in August.

Uganda Bureau of Statistics

The figures show that price pressures have not disappeared, even as the rate remains below Uganda’s medium-term inflation target of 5%. The Uganda Investment Authority, citing the country’s economic performance, said inflation averaged 3.3% in the 2025/26 financial year.

For consumers, however, the experience of inflation depends on the goods and services they purchase. A small change in the national average does not necessarily mean that every household faces the same increase in expenditure.

What the figures mean for households

Inflation is a measure of the rate at which prices change. When inflation rises, the purchasing power of money can decline if incomes do not increase at the same pace.

For a household that spends a large share of its income on food, transport and other essential services, changes in those prices can have a greater effect than the national average suggests. Businesses also face decisions about whether to absorb higher costs, adjust prices or reduce expenditure.

The August release is therefore relevant to both consumers and producers. It provides an official measure of price changes, while the underlying composition of the Consumer Price Index helps explain which categories are contributing most to the movement.

The available official summary confirms the overall inflation rate and its month-to-month change. It does not, by itself, establish the individual causes of the August increase. Those details should be drawn from the full UBOS publication before making more specific claims about food, transport or energy prices.

Economic growth and price stability

The inflation figures come against a backdrop of continued economic expansion.

The Uganda Investment Authority reported that Uganda’s nominal gross domestic product rose to Shs250.4 trillion in the 2025/26 financial year, from Shs227.9 trillion in 2024/25. It also reported that the economy was projected to reach Shs287.23 trillion in 2026/27.

Nominal GDP measures the value of economic output at current prices. It is useful for understanding the size of the economy, but it should not be confused with real economic growth, which adjusts for price changes.

The relationship between growth and inflation is important for policymakers. An expanding economy can create opportunities for employment, investment and business activity, while persistent price pressures can reduce the purchasing power of households.

The challenge is to sustain economic growth while keeping inflation manageable.

The role of monetary policy

The Bank of Uganda is responsible for monetary policy and financial stability. Its official website lists the August 2026 Monetary Policy Statement among its latest publications and provides access to its State of the Economy report.

Monetary policy decisions are closely watched because they influence borrowing conditions, saving decisions and the cost of credit. However, the August inflation figure alone does not establish what the central bank will do next.

Any assessment of future interest-rate decisions should be based on the Bank of Uganda’s own policy statements and the broader economic data available at the time.

Why inflation matters to businesses

For businesses, inflation affects the cost of inputs, transport, wages and other operating expenses. It can also influence consumer demand, particularly when households have less money available after paying for essential goods and services.

Small businesses may be especially sensitive to changes in operating costs because they often have limited room to absorb higher expenses.

At the same time, businesses must consider whether price increases could reduce demand for their products or services. The balance between costs and consumer purchasing power is therefore an important part of the inflation story.

The importance of official statistics

The UBOS Consumer Price Index is one of the key sources used to monitor price movements in Uganda. The August 2026 release is part of the bureau’s regular publication of economic statistics.

Reliable statistics help policymakers, businesses and households make informed decisions. They also provide a common basis for discussing economic conditions.

For journalists, the figures must be reported carefully. A rise in headline inflation does not automatically mean that every commodity has become more expensive, nor does it establish the cause of the change without examining the detailed data.

What to watch next

The next inflation releases will help show whether the August increase is temporary or part of a continuing trend. Other indicators, including economic growth, exchange-rate movements, interest rates and producer prices, can provide additional context.

The Bank of Uganda’s published economic reports and UBOS’s monthly Consumer Price Index releases will remain important sources for tracking these developments.

Uganda Bureau of Statistics

For households and businesses, the practical question is how price changes affect their own budgets and costs. For policymakers, the broader question is how to maintain price stability while supporting economic activity.

Conclusion

Uganda’s inflation rate rose to 4.1% in August 2026, according to UBOS, marking a modest increase from July’s 4.0%.

The figure is a reminder that price stability remains an important part of Uganda’s economic management. While the latest rate remains below the medium-term target of 5%, continued monitoring of inflation and other economic indicators will be necessary to understand the direction of the economy.

Editorial note: This article is based on the official UBOS August 2026 Consumer Price Index summary and the Uganda Investment Authority’s economic performance report. The detailed causes of the August inflation movement should be confirmed from the full UBOS publication before publication.
