The Government of Uganda is considering a set of private sector proposals aimed at accelerating agricultural modernization, expanding livestock exports, and tackling the growing challenge of counterfeit agro-inputs.
During a meeting at Nakasero State Lodge, Mr. Andile Ramaphosa and his team presented plans for strategic collaboration with the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) and the Regional Service Centre Initiative at Namunkekera Farm. The proposals focus on strengthening the regulated breeding, harvesting, and export of Ankole cattle genetics to markets across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and beyond.
The delegation also proposed the establishment of a Build-Operate-Transfer (B.O.T.) laboratory to enhance the detection and control of counterfeit agricultural inputs, a challenge that continues to affect productivity and farmer confidence.
The proposed initiatives align with Uganda’s broader agenda of promoting value addition, attracting investment, and enhancing the competitiveness of the agricultural sector. By improving livestock genetics and strengthening quality assurance systems, the projects have the potential to create new economic opportunities while supporting sustainable agricultural growth.
Government officials welcomed the proposals and commended the delegation for its innovative approach. The proposals will be carefully reviewed, with support expected for initiatives that contribute to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation and long-term development goals.
