A disturbing case of alleged child torture in Wakiso District has triggered public anger after Police rescued a 10-year-old boy who was reportedly subjected to brutal punishment over accusations of theft.
The incident happened in Nkoowe Village, Mende Sub-county, where residents alerted authorities after noticing the child in severe pain and with serious injuries on both hands. Police say the boy had allegedly been tortured by the very people entrusted with his care.
According to preliminary investigations, the main suspect, 30-year-old mechanic Muwanguzi Matovu, accused the child of stealing UGX 47,000 from the home. Instead of reporting the matter to authorities or using lawful disciplinary measures, he allegedly tied the boy to a window using a rubber string for an extended period.
Investigators say the child struggled desperately to free himself during the ordeal, worsening the injuries to his hands and body. By the time concerned residents intervened and informed Police on May 7, the victim was reportedly in critical condition and required urgent medical attention.
The boy is currently receiving treatment at hospital as doctors closely monitor his recovery.
Police have since arrested three people in connection with the incident, including the child’s father, Muwanguzi Farouk, the uncle Muwanguzi Matovu, and Tusubira Rebecca, who is married to the uncle. The trio remains in custody pending further investigations.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Kawala Racheal condemned the alleged torture, warning guardians and parents against using violence as punishment. She stressed that children must be protected from abuse and encouraged the public to report suspected cases before they escalate.
The case has reignited national concern over rising incidents of violence against children in homes and communities. Child rights advocates are now calling for stronger enforcement of laws against child abuse and increased public education on safe and responsible parenting practices.
Residents in Wakiso and many Ugandans online have continued demanding justice for the young victim, with growing calls for tougher action against anyone found guilty of abusing children.
