Police in Kabale have renewed calls for greater road safety among commercial drivers following a minor crash involving a Gateway Bus Company vehicle along the Mbarara Highway.
The incident occurred at Kabaraga at around 2:00am on Friday, June 6, 2026, and involved bus registration number UBE 977S.
According to Territorial Police at Kabale Central Police Station, traffic officers swiftly responded to the scene and secured the area as investigations commenced.
Preliminary findings point to reckless driving as the likely cause of the crash, according to Kigezi Sub-region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime.
In the aftermath of the incident, Tumushime emphasized the need for bus drivers to prioritize passenger safety by ensuring they are well-rested before taking long journeys.
“We encourage our bus drivers to always be mindful of the lives of passengers on board. They should ensure they have enough rest to avoid fatigue and should not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” he said.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any passengers or crew members sustained injuries. However, police described the incident as a minor road crash and said inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.
The crash adds to growing concerns about driver fatigue and adherence to road safety regulations on Uganda’s major highways, particularly during overnight travel.
This shifts the focus from the crash itself to the broader issue of driver fatigue and road safety.
