MITYANA —Police in Mityana District have launched investigations into suspected aggravated robbery after residents of Kiwoya Bweza Village in Kakindu Sub-county arrested two men allegedly found in possession of military uniforms, weapons and housebreaking tools.
The suspects were reportedly linked to a series of night attacks in the area, prompting residents to intervene and hand them over to police.
According to Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson **SSP Lameck Kigozi**, the main suspect, **Wilberforce Nzabashaija, 26**, a resident of Kiriri in Makindye Division, Kampala, arrived at his mother’s home in Kiwoya Bweza Village on August 1, 2026, carrying luggage whose contents were not initially known.
Police preliminary investigations indicate that on the night of August 1 and 2, Nzabashaija allegedly dressed in military attire and armed himself with a knife, pliers and a screwdriver before moving with his brother, **Fredrick Kusasira**, to carry out suspected robberies in the village.
The suspects allegedly broke into the home of Ms Namatta, where they stole a bicycle, before proceeding to the residences of Ntegeyo and Teopista Nakiwala, where they reportedly threatened occupants while demanding money and other valuables.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects moved from one home to another during the night, targeting residents and threatening them while demanding cash and other valuables,” Kigozi said.
The alleged crime spree was disrupted after residents raised an alarm, attracting community members who responded and arrested Nzabashaija.
During the arrest, residents recovered military uniforms, a knife, pliers and a screwdriver, which were later handed over to police at Kakindu Police Station as exhibits.
Kigozi commended the residents for their vigilance, saying their quick response helped prevent further crimes and enabled police to secure crucial evidence.
Following a report filed by Kiwoya Bweza Village Chairperson **Sabiiti Kirudde**, police also arrested Kusasira, who is alleged to have participated in the incidents, as well as their mother, who is accused of attempting to obstruct police officers during the arrest.
During joint interrogations by detectives from Mityana Police and the Regional Flying Squad Unit, Nzabashaija allegedly confessed to an earlier burglary in Kiriri, Makindye Division, in mid-July 2026.
Police said the suspect allegedly admitted to breaking into the residence of a serving UPDF officer and stealing two military uniforms, a mattress, a sweater and a bag.
Investigators suspect that the stolen military attire may have been intended to facilitate criminal activities by enabling the suspects to impersonate security personnel.
“The suspect disclosed that he intended to use the military uniforms in unlawful activities, including robberies and the establishment of illegal roadblocks. These allegations remain part of ongoing investigations,” Kigozi said.
Police further stated that after an earlier robbery attempt in Kampala allegedly failed to yield money, the suspect relocated to his mother’s village in Mityana, where he reportedly planned to continue his criminal activities.
Authorities have since launched efforts to recover the remaining military items believed to still be in the suspects’ possession.
“We are continuing investigations and working to recover all government property connected to this case. Once investigations are complete, the case file will be submitted to the Resident State Attorney for legal guidance and sanction of the appropriate charges,” Kigozi said.
Police praised the residents of Kiwoya Bweza for arresting the suspect without resorting to mob justice, urging communities to continue working with security agencies in combating crime.
“We appreciate the community for acting responsibly. Instead of taking the law into their own hands, they handed the suspects over to police, allowing the justice system to take its course,” Kigozi said.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing as police continue gathering evidence before f
orwarding the case file for prosecution.
