KAMPALA— Uganda has formally presented the candidature of Ambassador Olara Otunnu for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, reaffirming its commitment to effective, inclusive and responsive multilateralism.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marking the official launch of Uganda’s campaign to have the veteran diplomat elected to the world’s top diplomatic office.
Speaking on the nomination, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vincent Bagiire, said Uganda was proud to present a candidate with extensive experience in international diplomacy, peacebuilding and global governance.
“Uganda is honoured to present a distinguished statesman whose decades of experience in diplomacy, peacebuilding and international governance position him well to lead the United Nations,” Bagiire said.
Otunnu is one of Uganda’s most accomplished diplomats, having served as Uganda’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations between 1980 and 1985. During his tenure, he also served as President of the United Nations Security Council in December 1981.
He has held several senior international positions, including serving as the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, where he championed the protection of children affected by war.
The government said Otunnu’s candidature reflects Uganda’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and supporting reforms aimed at making the United Nations more effective in addressing global challenges.
The selection of the next UN Secretary-General will follow consultations among member states in accordance with the organisation’s established procedures.
