The High Court has ordered TV10 journalist Dean Lubowa Saava, popularly known as “Gano Maziima,” to pay UGX 100 million in damages to Deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG) Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe after finding that he made defamatory statements against her on social media.
The ruling follows a lawsuit filed by Twinomugisha, who challenged allegations circulated online by the journalist accusing her of involvement in corruption. The court determined that the claims were defamatory and had caused harm to her reputation.
In its judgment, the court awarded UGX 100 million in general damages to the Deputy IGG, reinforcing the principle that individuals who publish unverified allegations can be held accountable for the consequences of their statements.
The decision is being viewed as a significant reminder of the legal responsibilities that accompany the use of social media platforms, particularly for media practitioners and public commentators whose statements can have far-reaching effects on the reputations of others.
