President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations as CAF officials and the national AFCON task force assess progress and address outstanding requirements ahead of the tournament.
President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed Uganda’s readiness to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as the country works with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the national AFCON task force to review preparations and address outstanding requirements before the continental tournament.
The meeting brought together the President, CAF representatives and officials involved in Uganda’s preparations for AFCON 2027, which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania. Discussions focused on the progress of preparations and the remaining requirements that need to be completed before the tournament.
The engagement comes as the three East African countries move closer to the first AFCON finals to be jointly hosted by the region, placing increased attention on infrastructure, transport, accommodation, security, stadium facilities and other tournament-related requirements.
Museveni’s reaffirmation of Uganda’s commitment signals the government’s continued support for the preparations and the broader regional hosting project.
Uganda steps up preparations for AFCON 2027
Uganda is preparing to host matches as part of the Pamoja AFCON 2027 tournament, alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
The tournament is expected to provide an opportunity for the three countries to showcase their sporting facilities, tourism attractions and economic potential to an international audience.
For Uganda, preparations have required coordination between government institutions, football authorities, local agencies and the wider national AFCON task force.
The latest meeting with CAF officials provided an opportunity to assess progress and identify areas where additional work or coordination may be required.
While Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to the tournament, the review also highlights the importance of completing outstanding requirements within the timelines set for the competition.
CAF involvement in preparations
CAF plays a central role in determining whether host countries meet the technical and operational standards required for an AFCON tournament.
The continental football governing body evaluates areas including stadium infrastructure, training facilities, accommodation, transport, security, medical services, broadcasting arrangements and other operational requirements.
The assessment process is intended to ensure that venues and host cities are capable of supporting teams, officials, supporters and international media during the tournament.
For Uganda, continued engagement with CAF is therefore an important part of the preparation process.
The discussions with CAF officials and the national task force provide an opportunity for authorities to understand outstanding requirements and coordinate efforts to address them.
Stadium infrastructure remains important
Stadium readiness is among the most visible aspects of preparations for any major football tournament.
Uganda’s ability to successfully host AFCON matches will depend on having facilities that meet CAF standards for spectators, players, officials, media and broadcasters.
The country has been investing in sports infrastructure as it prepares for major international competitions.
The Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, remains one of Uganda’s principal sports facilities and has undergone major rehabilitation in recent years.
Other facilities and training venues are also important because AFCON teams require suitable locations for training and preparation during the tournament.
CAF’s assessment of venues will therefore remain an important component of Uganda’s readiness.
Transport and accommodation form part of the preparations
Hosting an international tournament involves more than football stadiums.
Large numbers of players, officials, supporters, journalists and other visitors are expected to travel between host cities and venues.
This places pressure on airports, roads, hotels, public transport systems and other services.
Uganda’s preparations therefore require coordination beyond the sports sector.
Accommodation capacity and standards are particularly important because participating teams and CAF officials operate under specific requirements during major competitions.
Transport planning must also take into account the movement of teams and officials, match-day traffic and the movement of supporters.
The national preparation process provides an opportunity for relevant agencies to identify possible gaps and address them before the tournament begins.
Security and public safety
Security will also be a major consideration during AFCON 2027.
International football tournaments attract large crowds and require coordinated security arrangements around stadiums, hotels, training grounds, transport routes and other public spaces.
Ugandan security agencies will therefore have an important role in planning for the tournament.
Effective security planning will need to balance public safety with the need to provide a welcoming environment for visitors and football supporters.
The regional nature of the tournament also means that security and movement arrangements will require coordination among Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
Economic opportunities for Uganda
Hosting AFCON 2027 could create economic opportunities for Uganda through tourism, hospitality, transport, retail and other services.
International visitors attending matches may also visit national parks, cultural attractions and other tourism destinations.
Hotels, restaurants, transport companies and small businesses could benefit from increased demand during the tournament.
Major sporting events can also provide opportunities for local enterprises to promote products and services to international visitors.
However, maximising these benefits will depend on effective planning and coordination.
The tournament could also provide a platform for Uganda to promote itself as a tourism and investment destination beyond the football competition.
Regional significance of Pamoja AFCON 2027
AFCON 2027 has particular significance because it will be hosted jointly by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
The three countries have promoted the tournament under the Pamoja concept, reflecting the shared regional nature of the event.
Joint hosting requires coordination between the three governments, football associations and multiple technical agencies.
It also offers an opportunity to strengthen East Africa’s capacity to organise major international sporting events.
The tournament could leave a longer-term legacy if investments in stadiums, transport, hospitality and other infrastructure are maintained and used effectively after the competition.
Government commitment
Museveni’s reaffirmation of Uganda’s readiness demonstrates the political importance attached to the tournament.
Government support is essential because many of the requirements for hosting AFCON extend beyond the responsibilities of football administrators.
Infrastructure development, security, transport, immigration, health services and tourism promotion all require public-sector coordination.
The President’s engagement with CAF officials and the national task force therefore places the preparations within the wider government agenda.
At the same time, the existence of outstanding requirements means that continued monitoring will be necessary as the tournament approaches.
The importance of meeting CAF requirements
CAF’s technical requirements are designed to protect the quality and integrity of the tournament.
Meeting those requirements can also strengthen Uganda’s capacity to host future international sporting events.
For the national AFCON task force, the immediate priority will be to track outstanding areas, assign responsibilities and ensure that agreed improvements are completed within the required timeframe.
Regular assessments can help identify problems early and provide authorities with sufficient time to implement corrective measures.
This will be particularly important for infrastructure projects that require procurement, construction, testing and certification.
Football development and the legacy question
Beyond hosting matches, AFCON 2027 could contribute to the development of football in Uganda.
A major international tournament can increase interest in the sport, encourage young people to participate and expose local players and coaches to higher levels of competition.
The event could also encourage investment in grassroots football infrastructure.
However, the long-term value of hosting AFCON will depend partly on what happens after the tournament.
Maintaining renovated facilities, improving football administration and expanding opportunities for young players could help ensure that the tournament leaves a lasting legacy.
Uganda’s preparations in a wider African context
AFCON is one of Africa’s most prominent sporting competitions and attracts significant international attention.
For host countries, the tournament is both a sporting responsibility and an opportunity to demonstrate organisational capacity.
Uganda’s preparations therefore have implications beyond football.
Successful hosting could strengthen the country’s international profile and contribute to East Africa’s reputation as a capable destination for major sporting events.
Conversely, delays in meeting requirements could place additional pressure on organisers as the competition approaches.
This makes the ongoing CAF assessments and government coordination particularly important.
Looking ahead to 2027
With preparations continuing, the focus will increasingly shift from planning to implementation.
Authorities will need to demonstrate measurable progress in areas identified through CAF assessments and ensure that all participating institutions remain coordinated.
The national AFCON task force will be expected to continue working with CAF and other stakeholders to resolve outstanding issues.
The experience of previous major tournaments shows that preparation requires sustained attention to detail, particularly in areas that directly affect players, officials and supporters.
For Uganda, the objective is not simply to host matches but to deliver an event that meets continental standards and contributes to the country’s sporting and economic ambitions.
Conclusion
President Museveni’s reaffirmation of Uganda’s readiness to host AFCON 2027 comes as CAF officials and the national AFCON task force continue reviewing the country’s preparations.
The meeting underscores the importance of addressing outstanding requirements well before the tournament begins.
Uganda’s participation in the Pamoja hosting arrangement with Kenya and Tanzania represents a significant opportunity for East African football and regional cooperation.
The success of the project will ultimately depend on sustained coordination, timely completion of infrastructure and operational requirements, and close cooperation with CAF.
As 2027 approaches, Uganda’s ability to turn its commitment into fully operational tournament facilities will be central to its role in one of Africa’s biggest sporting events.
