A 32-year-old businesswoman was brutally killed during a violent robbery at her home in Kakumiro District, raising fresh concerns about the safety of residents amid increasing cases of armed attacks.
Alice Natukunda lost her life on Saturday night after a group of masked men armed with machetes reportedly stormed her residence in Kisiita East Cell at around 9pm. According to preliminary investigations, the attackers demanded money from the occupants before turning violent when their demands were not immediately met.
Police say Natukunda was fatally attacked during the incident, while other family members, including her husband, Justus Tugumisirize, were threatened and ordered not to raise an alarm.
The assailants reportedly fled with approximately Shs17.5 million in cash before disappearing from the area.
Authorities were alerted after the attackers had left the scene, prompting a police response and the launch of a manhunt for the suspects.
Albertine Region Police spokesperson Julius Hakiza confirmed the incident, noting that specialized security teams, including the Flying Squad Unit, have been deployed to support investigations and track down those responsible.
Security agencies have appealed to the public for any information that could aid the ongoing investigations as efforts continue to bring the perpetrators to justice.
