Manchester United have wasted little time in planning for life after Casemiro, with Atalanta midfielder Ederson closing in on a move to Old Trafford this summer.
The Red Devils are expected to complete a deal worth an initial £35 million, with a further £3 million in performance-related add-ons, as Michael Carrick begins shaping his squad ahead of a return to a busier campaign next season.
Casemiro’s departure marks the end of a successful spell at United. Despite enduring a difficult period under Ruben Amorim, the Brazilian rediscovered his best form during the second half of the season, finishing the campaign with nine goals across all competitions.
His partnership with captain Bruno Fernandes proved particularly effective. The duo developed one of the most productive connections in the Premier League, with Fernandes regularly supplying Casemiro’s attacking contributions. Their combination became a key weapon for United, especially in the latter months of the season.
However, with Casemiro now moving on, Carrick faces the challenge of rebuilding his midfield ahead of a season that is expected to include significantly more fixtures. United played just 40 matches across all competitions this term after early exits from domestic cup competitions, but the club anticipates a much heavier schedule next season.
Ederson has emerged as the preferred replacement. The 26-year-old has impressed in Serie A with Atalanta, earning a reputation as a versatile midfielder capable of operating in both defensive and advanced roles. His experience in European competition is also viewed as a major asset.
The Brazilian enters the final year of his contract in Italy, a factor that has helped United secure a deal at a relatively modest fee. During the 2025-26 campaign, Ederson registered three goals and two assists across all competitions while continuing to establish himself as one of Serie A’s most reliable midfield performers.
Should the move be completed as expected, Ederson will become Carrick’s first permanent signing as Manchester United manager and a key figure in the club’s midfield evolution following Casemiro’s exit.
