Kampala – Veteran politician and diplomat Lydia Wanyoto Mutende is poised to take on a key role in Uganda’s public service sector following her appearance before Parliament’s Committee on Appointments for vetting as State Minister for Public Service.
Her nomination comes at a crucial time as government accelerates efforts to improve service delivery, digitize human resource systems, and strengthen accountability within the civil service.
During the vetting session, Wanyoto outlined her experience in public administration, leadership, and advocacy, highlighting a career that has spanned national politics, diplomacy, and regional affairs.
Speaking after the meeting, she expressed appreciation to President Yoweri Museveni for entrusting her with the position and thanked Ugandans for their support and prayers.
“I thank His Excellency the President for appointing me State Minister for Public Service and the Ugandans as well for the prayers,” Wanyoto said.
A seasoned lawyer and National Resistance Movement (NRM) leader, Wanyoto previously served as Woman Member of Parliament for Mbale District and later represented Uganda as Ambassador to Ethiopia, Djibouti, and the African Union. She has also played various mobilization and leadership roles within the ruling party.
If Parliament approves her nomination, Wanyoto will support the Ministry of Public Service in implementing reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency across government institutions, improving management of pensions, and strengthening human resource policies.
The Committee on Appointments is expected to submit its report to Parliament, where legislators will make the final decision on her appointment.
Her potential entry into the ministry has been welcomed by supporters, many of whom cite her extensive leadership experience and diplomatic background as assets that could contribute to ongoing efforts to modernize Uganda’s public service.
