KAMPALA —St Lawrence University has offered 100 bursaries to the Office of the NRM National Chairman (ONC) to support Ugandan students who may be unable to pursue university education because of financial difficulties.

The development was announced by ONC Manager SPA/PA Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo, who said the bursaries would provide an opportunity for selected students to access higher education.

Namyalo made the announcement in Kampala, describing the initiative as an important opportunity for students whose academic ambitions could be affected by the rising cost of university education.

The 100 bursaries are expected to be allocated to eligible beneficiaries through an arrangement between St Lawrence University and the ONC.

#Opportunity for students

The initiative is aimed at supporting students who face financial barriers to accessing higher education.

University education can place considerable financial demands on families, including tuition, accommodation, scholastic materials and other related expenses. For some students, these costs can affect their ability to enrol or continue with their studies.

The bursary initiative is therefore expected to provide assistance to selected students and enable them to pursue their academic goals.

Namyalo said the partnership demonstrates the importance of cooperation between educational institutions and programmes serving communities.

She described the bursaries as an opportunity to help young Ugandans who have the academic ambition to pursue higher education but may require financial support to do so.

#ONC to provide application details

The Office of the NRM National Chairman is expected to provide further information on how students can apply for the bursaries.

Details regarding eligibility requirements, the application procedure, courses covered and other conditions attached to the scholarships are yet to be communicated.

Prospective applicants have therefore been urged to await official communication from the ONC before submitting applications.

The announcement did not indicate whether the bursaries will cover full tuition costs or a specified portion of university expenses.

Further information from the ONC and St Lawrence University is expected to clarify the terms of the programme.

#Education access

The bursary initiative comes at a time when expanding access to higher education remains an important issue for Uganda’s young population.

Financial constraints can prevent students from enrolling in universities or force others to discontinue their studies.

Scholarships and bursaries provide one mechanism through which institutions and organisations can help reduce such barriers.

By making financial assistance available to selected students, the initiative could enable beneficiaries to acquire university-level skills and qualifications that may improve their future employment and career prospects.

#Partnership with university

The arrangement between St Lawrence University and the ONC highlights the role that partnerships can play in expanding educational opportunities.

Universities can provide academic programmes and facilities, while public and community-facing institutions can help identify students who require financial assistance.

Such cooperation can also help institutions direct support towards students who might otherwise struggle to access higher education.

Namyalo said the partnership reflects the importance of creating opportunities for young Ugandans and supporting their educational aspirations.

#Focus on young people

The bursaries are also expected to contribute to broader efforts aimed at supporting young people.

Access to higher education can equip students with professional knowledge and skills needed to participate in the economy and contribute to their communities.

For students from financially constrained households, bursary support can reduce some of the immediate barriers associated with university education.

The initiative therefore places education support within the wider discussion about youth empowerment and opportunities for young Ugandans.

#More information expected

While the announcement confirms that 100 bursaries have been offered, important details about the programme are yet to be released.

These include the specific academic programmes covered, eligibility criteria, application deadlines and the extent of financial support available to each beneficiary.

The ONC is expected to communicate these details to prospective applicants as arrangements for distributing the bursaries are finalised.

Students interested in the opportunity will need to follow official announcements from the ONC and St Lawrence University to establish how and when applications will be received.

#Conclusion*

The offer of 100 bursaries by St Lawrence University to the Office of the NRM National Chairman provides an opportunity for selected Ugandan students to pursue higher education despite financial challenges.

The initiative demonstrates the potential of partnerships between universities and public-facing institutions to support students and expand access to education.

As the ONC prepares to release details about the application process and eligibility requirements, prospective beneficiaries will be watching for official guidance on how to access the bursaries.

For students who qualify, the support could provide an important step towards completing university education and pursuing future professional opportunities.
