ENTEBBE — President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni have hosted Pastor Enoch Adeboye and his wife, Pastor Folu Adeboye, at State House Entebbe ahead of the consecration of their daughter, Patience, as a bishop.
Pastor Adeboye is the global leader of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), one of Nigeria’s prominent Pentecostal Christian organisations.
The meeting brought together Ugandan and Nigerian Christian leaders ahead of the planned consecration ceremony scheduled to take place in Maya.
President Museveni, speaking about the significance of Christianity in Africa, said Christian teachings had contributed positively to African societies and strengthened values that promote peaceful coexistence.
He cited teachings including love for one’s neighbour, forgiveness and the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan as values that he said are consistent with the National Resistance Movement’s principle of putting interests above identity.
Christianity has added value to our ancient African cultures,” President Museveni said.
He highlighted the Christian teaching of loving even those with whom one disagrees rather than seeking revenge, saying such values complement principles of social cohesion and peaceful coexistence.
#Museveni welcomes Adeboye family
The President said he and the First Lady were pleased to welcome Pastor Adeboye and his wife to Uganda.
He also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian pastor and other guests who had travelled to Uganda to attend the consecration ceremony.
“We are grateful to Pastor Adeboye and all our friends who have come to witness the consecration of our daughter, Patience, as a Bishop tomorrow in Maya. We welcome you all,” he said.
The visit provides an opportunity for religious leaders from Uganda and Nigeria to interact while strengthening longstanding Christian ties between the two countries.
#Christianity and African values
In his remarks, President Museveni linked Christian teachings to traditional African values that emphasise community, responsibility and concern for others.
He pointed particularly to the teaching of loving one’s neighbour and the Good Samaritan, a biblical story centred on helping a person in need regardless of social or group differences.
The President said such teachings had reinforced aspects of African heritage and contributed to values that encourage people to look beyond identity and work for the common good.
His remarks also connected these values to the NRM’s political philosophy of prioritising interests over identity.
#Adeboye’s visit
Pastor Enoch Adeboye’s presence in Uganda comes as Christian leaders and other invited guests prepare for the bishop consecration ceremony in Maya.
Adeboye has for decades been a prominent figure in global Pentecostal Christianity through his leadership of the RCCG.
His visit to Uganda is expected to attract Christian leaders and worshippers from different backgrounds for the religious ceremony.
The event also provides an opportunity for Christian communities in Uganda and Nigeria to strengthen their relationships through shared faith and religious activities.
#First Lady joins reception
First Lady Janet Museveni joined President Museveni in welcoming Pastor Adeboye and his wife at State House.
Her participation comes after a recent period in which religious leaders and members of the public have held prayers and thanksgiving gatherings for her.
The State House meeting also offered an opportunity for the visiting Nigerian religious leaders to interact with the First Family ahead of the ceremony.
#Faith and social values
The President’s remarks placed particular emphasis on the social dimension of Christianity.
He said teachings about forgiveness, love and helping others can contribute to peaceful relations within communities, particularly where people hold different opinions or identities.
The reference to the Good Samaritan underscored the importance of extending assistance beyond one’s immediate community.
Such teachings have remained central to Christian evangelism and social engagement across many African communities.
#Uganda-Nigeria religious ties
The visit also reflects the longstanding religious connections between Uganda and Nigeria.
Nigeria has developed one of Africa’s largest Pentecostal Christian movements, with churches and ministries operating across the continent and beyond.
Uganda has similarly experienced significant growth in Christian religious organisations and Pentecostal ministries.
Interactions between religious leaders from the two countries therefore provide opportunities for collaboration in areas such as evangelism, leadership, community service and social development.
#Consecration ceremony
The central event surrounding the visit will be the consecration of Patience as a bishop in Maya.
Consecration ceremonies are significant occasions within Christian traditions because they formally recognise and commission religious leaders for service.
The gathering is expected to bring together church leaders, family members, invited guests and worshippers.
The participation of Pastor Adeboye and other international guests adds an international dimension to the occasion.
#Broader message
Beyond the religious ceremony, President Museveni’s comments presented Christianity as a contributor to social values and cultural development.
He argued that Christian teachings had complemented aspects of Uganda’s traditional heritage rather than simply replacing them.
His remarks focused on values such as love, forgiveness and concern for others, which he said have strengthened African communities.
The President also used the occasion to welcome visitors who had travelled to Uganda for the event, expressing appreciation for their presence.
#Conclusion
The meeting at State House Entebbe brought together Uganda’s First Family and one of Nigeria’s most prominent Christian leaders ahead of a major religious ceremony in Maya.
For President Museveni, the visit was also an opportunity to highlight what he described as Christianity’s contribution to African values and social cohesion.
As religious leaders and guests prepare for the consecration of Patience as a bishop, the gathering has highlighted the role of faith in strengthening relationships between individuals, communities and countries.
