KAMPALA — Police have launched investigations to establish the identity and circumstances surrounding the death of an unidentified person whose body was discovered in a swamp on the outskirts of Kampala on Monday morning.

The body was discovered by residents who had reportedly gone to the area early in the morning before they alerted local leaders and police.

Preliminary information indicated that the deceased was an adult male, although police had not immediately established his identity or where he had come from.

Officers from the area police station later visited the scene and cordoned off the area as detectives began gathering evidence.

A police spokesperson said the body had been taken to the city mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continued.

“We have commenced inquiries to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances under which he died. We appeal to members of the public with information about a missing person to report to the nearest police station,” the spokesperson said.

Residents express concern

Residents said the discovery had caused concern in the community, with some calling for increased security patrols in isolated areas.

One resident, who requested not to be named, said the body was first noticed by people passing near the swamp.

“People became suspicious after seeing what appeared to be a body lying in the vegetation. We informed the local leaders, who contacted the police,” the resident said.

Police had by Monday evening not released details regarding the possible cause of death.

Detectives were expected to review the scene and interview residents as part of efforts to reconstruct the deceased person’s final movements.

Identification efforts under way

Authorities said identification would be one of the major priorities in the investigation.

Police urged families with relatives who had recently gone missing to visit the appropriate authorities and provide information that could assist investigators.

The postmortem examination is expected to help establish the cause of death, while investigators will also examine whether there were any signs of foul play.

Police cautioned the public against speculating about the identity of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding the death before investigations are concluded.

The discovery of unidentified bodies often presents challenges for investigators, particularly where there are no immediate documents or family members available to assist in identification.

Police said further information would be released after the postmortem examination and preliminary investigations.
