ENTEBBE — Uganda has formally presented Ambassador Olara Otunnu as its candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, with the Government seeking support from members of the United Nations Security Council.
The candidature was presented during a meeting held at State House, Entebbe, where President Yoweri Museveni met ambassadors representing UN Security Council member states.
Museveni urged the envoys to convey Uganda’s endorsement of Otunnu’s candidature to their respective governments, citing his experience, integrity, and extensive diplomatic background as key qualities that make him suitable to lead the global body.
The President said Uganda’s support for Otunnu’s bid is anchored on the country’s contribution to regional peace and security, as well as its longstanding role in hosting refugees.
He noted that these efforts reflect the principles and values that guide Uganda’s support for strong and effective international leadership.
Otunnu, a former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, has served in various high-level diplomatic roles and is recognised for his experience in international affairs and conflict resolution.
Uganda’s move to promote his candidature comes as the country seeks to rally support among members of the international community ahead of the selection process for the UN Secretary-General position.
