LUWERO — Three people have been killed and eight others injured in a road crash along the Kampala–Gulu Highway in Luwero District, police said.
The crash occurred when a loaded lorry attempted to overtake a long line of vehicles before colliding head-on with an approaching passenger taxi.
According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twineamazima, the collision left three people dead and eight others injured. The injured victims were rushed to Luwero Hospital for medical attention.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the crash pointed to dangerous overtaking, one of the major causes of fatal road crashes along Uganda’s highways.
The lorry was reportedly travelling along the Kampala–Gulu route when its driver attempted to overtake vehicles ahead. During the manoeuvre, the lorry crossed into the path of the oncoming taxi, resulting in the head-on collision.
Emergency responders and police officers were called to the scene as efforts were made to rescue the victims and clear the wreckage from the busy highway.
The bodies of the deceased were taken for postmortem examination as police continued investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The Kampala–Gulu Highway is an important transport corridor connecting Kampala with northern Uganda, carrying passenger vehicles, cargo trucks and other road users. Previous crashes along the route have raised concerns about speeding, dangerous overtaking and other forms of reckless driving.
Traffic police have repeatedly urged motorists to exercise caution, maintain safe distances and avoid overtaking when road conditions do not allow safe passage.
The latest crash has once again highlighted concerns about road safety on the highway, particularly involving heavy goods vehicles and passenger taxis.
Police investigations are continuing to establish whether excessive speed, driver error or other factors contributed to the collision.
