Ambassador Zaake Kibedi meets Fujairah Crown Prince as Uganda prepares for the fifth UAE–Uganda Business Forum

Uganda and the Emirate of Fujairah are seeking to deepen economic and development cooperation, with discussions focusing on trade, investment, agricultural exports, logistics, energy, mineral processing, tourism, financial services and technology.

The discussions took place on Monday, October 5, 2026, when Uganda’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Zaake Kibedi, accompanied by Deputy Head of Mission Amb. Aisa Ismail and other senior officials from the Ugandan mission, met Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah.

According to information released about the engagement, the meeting was aimed at translating the strong relationship between Uganda and the UAE into more practical economic opportunities, including increased investment, expanded exports, employment creation and sustainable development.

A key issue raised during the meeting was the upcoming fifth UAE–Uganda Business Forum, scheduled for October 26–29, 2026.

Ambassador Kibedi briefed the Crown Prince on preparations for the forum and invited him to attend the Fujairah segment on October 29 as Guest of Honour.

The invitation adds a high-level dimension to an event expected to bring together Ugandan and UAE business and investment stakeholders as the two sides seek to identify opportunities for stronger commercial ties.

Trade and investment at the centre of discussions

Trade and investment featured prominently in the discussions between the Ugandan delegation and the Crown Prince.

Uganda has been seeking to expand its access to international markets and attract investment into sectors capable of supporting economic growth, value addition and employment.

The engagement with Fujairah provides another avenue for pursuing those objectives within the UAE, one of Uganda’s important international economic partners.

Rather than focusing solely on the exchange of goods, the discussions covered a broad range of sectors, suggesting an emphasis on developing longer-term economic relationships.

These included agricultural exports, aviation and maritime logistics, energy, mineral processing, tourism, financial services, technology transfer and digital transformation.

The range of sectors reflects the increasingly interconnected nature of modern trade and investment.

For Uganda, agricultural exports and mineral processing can provide opportunities to increase the value generated from domestic resources. Logistics, aviation and maritime connectivity, meanwhile, can influence the cost and efficiency of moving goods to international markets.

Financial services and digital technologies can support businesses and improve access to modern financial and commercial systems.

Agricultural exports offer potential for growth

Agriculture remains an important component of Uganda’s economy and a major source of livelihoods.

The discussions on agricultural exports therefore have potential significance for producers, exporters and investors.

The UAE and other Gulf markets have demand for food products and agricultural commodities, creating opportunities for Uganda to expand exports if issues such as quality standards, supply reliability, logistics and value addition are effectively addressed.

For Ugandan producers, access to higher-value international markets can create opportunities for increased earnings.

However, converting market opportunities into sustained export growth requires investment across the agricultural value chain.

This includes post-harvest handling, storage, processing, packaging, certification, transport and market information.

The inclusion of agricultural exports in the Uganda–Fujairah discussions indicates an interest in strengthening these commercial links.

It also fits within Uganda’s broader efforts to move from exporting raw or minimally processed commodities towards greater value addition.

Mineral processing and value addition

Mineral processing was another area identified during the discussions.

Uganda has a range of mineral resources, but increasing the economic benefits of the sector depends not only on extraction but also on processing and value addition.

Investment in processing can potentially create jobs, increase export earnings and develop industrial capabilities.

For international investors, the availability of mineral resources can be attractive where there are suitable infrastructure, regulatory and market conditions.

The focus on mineral processing therefore points towards a model of cooperation in which Uganda seeks investment that contributes to domestic production capacity rather than simply the export of unprocessed resources.

Any future projects in the sector would, however, need to comply with Uganda’s laws, environmental requirements and investment regulations.

Aviation and maritime logistics

Aviation and maritime logistics were also identified as areas for cooperation.

Although Uganda is landlocked, its trade depends heavily on efficient regional and international transport networks.

Access to ports and reliable logistics services is therefore central to the movement of Ugandan exports and imports.

Fujairah’s location on the eastern side of the UAE and its established maritime and logistics infrastructure make it a potentially relevant partner in discussions concerning international trade connectivity.

The aviation sector can similarly support trade, tourism and business travel.

Improved connectivity can reduce some of the practical barriers faced by businesses seeking to access foreign markets.

For Uganda, stronger logistics links with the UAE could therefore have implications beyond bilateral trade by connecting Ugandan businesses to wider international markets.

The extent of any future cooperation in this area remains to be established, as the information provided does not identify specific agreements or projects concluded during the October 5 meeting.

Energy cooperation

Energy was another area highlighted in the discussions.

Reliable and affordable energy is a key requirement for industrialisation and economic development.

For Uganda, investment in energy infrastructure and related technologies can support manufacturing, mineral processing, agriculture and other productive sectors.

The country’s development plans have increasingly emphasised industrialisation and value addition, both of which require adequate energy supply.

The discussions with Fujairah could therefore contribute to exploring opportunities for investment and technical cooperation in the energy sector.

No specific energy project or financial commitment was announced as part of the meeting, and such details should not be inferred from the broader discussions.

Tourism and financial services

Tourism and financial services were also included among the sectors discussed.

Uganda’s tourism industry is an important source of foreign exchange and supports employment across accommodation, transport, hospitality, conservation and related services.

The UAE represents a significant international market for travel and business, while improved connections and targeted investment can create opportunities for Uganda’s tourism sector.

Financial services, meanwhile, can facilitate trade and investment by providing businesses with payment systems, financing and other forms of financial support.

Greater interaction between financial institutions can potentially make cross-border commercial activity more efficient.

However, any future cooperation would depend on regulatory arrangements and decisions by the relevant institutions and private-sector participants.

Technology transfer and digital transformation

Technology transfer and digital transformation were among the more forward-looking issues discussed by the Ugandan and Fujairah sides.

Digital technologies are increasingly influencing trade, financial services, agriculture, tourism, transport and government services.

For developing economies, access to technology and technical expertise can help businesses improve productivity and compete in international markets.

Technology partnerships can also support skills development when they involve training and knowledge transfer alongside investment.

Uganda has been pursuing digital transformation across different sectors, making technology cooperation an increasingly important part of its international economic engagement.

The inclusion of digital transformation in the discussions suggests that the relationship is not limited to traditional sectors such as agriculture and commodities.

Instead, both sides are considering areas that could shape future economic activity.

Focus turns to UAE–Uganda Business Forum

The upcoming fifth UAE–Uganda Business Forum is expected to provide a platform for taking some of these discussions into the business community.

The forum is scheduled to take place from October 26 to 29, 2026.

Ambassador Kibedi used his meeting with the Crown Prince to brief him on preparations for the forum and invite him to attend the Fujairah segment on October 29 as Guest of Honour.

The forum is expected to provide opportunities for businesses and investors to engage directly and explore potential commercial partnerships.

Business forums can be particularly useful when government-level discussions are followed by private-sector engagement, allowing investors to examine specific projects, market opportunities and potential partnerships.

For Uganda, the forum provides an opportunity to present investment opportunities while highlighting sectors where the country is seeking capital, technology and market access.

For UAE investors and businesses, it can provide a platform to assess opportunities in Uganda and understand the country’s economic priorities.

Building on existing cooperation

The October 5 meeting was described as building on ongoing cooperation between Uganda and Fujairah’s government institutions and private sector.

This suggests that the latest engagement is part of a continuing relationship rather than an isolated diplomatic meeting.

The role of the private sector is particularly important because government-to-government commitments must ultimately translate into commercial activity if they are to produce measurable economic benefits.

Investment projects, export contracts, logistics partnerships and technology agreements can create tangible outcomes for businesses and communities.

The stated objective of the current engagement is therefore to move from strong bilateral relations towards practical results.

These include increased investment, higher exports, employment opportunities and sustainable economic development.

From diplomatic relations to economic outcomes

The discussions illustrate a broader trend in international diplomacy in which economic cooperation has become an important component of foreign relations.

Diplomatic relationships increasingly involve efforts to attract investment, open markets, improve connectivity and facilitate private-sector partnerships.

For Uganda, this approach is especially relevant as the country seeks to expand its export base and attract investment capable of supporting industrialisation.

The UAE, with its established role as a global commercial and logistics centre, offers opportunities for Ugandan businesses seeking access to international markets.

At the same time, Uganda’s agricultural, mineral, tourism and emerging technology sectors can provide opportunities for investors interested in Africa’s growing markets.

The challenge will be ensuring that announced opportunities result in concrete projects and sustainable commercial relationships.

What the engagement could mean for Uganda

If successfully translated into investment and trade agreements, stronger cooperation with Fujairah could benefit Uganda in several areas.

Increased agricultural exports could provide additional markets for Ugandan producers.

Investment in mineral processing could contribute to domestic value addition and industrial employment.

Improved logistics cooperation could make it easier for Ugandan companies to reach international customers.

Tourism partnerships could help attract more visitors and investment into Uganda’s hospitality sector.

Financial and technology cooperation could also strengthen the infrastructure supporting modern businesses.

The actual economic impact, however, will depend on whether discussions lead to specific projects, investment commitments, export contracts and partnerships.

The October 5 meeting itself did not announce specific financial figures or signed agreements, based on the information available.

A broader Uganda-UAE economic relationship

The engagement with Fujairah forms part of Uganda’s wider relationship with the UAE.

The Gulf country has become an important commercial and investment partner for many African economies.

For Uganda, maintaining strong engagement with the UAE provides opportunities to attract capital, access international markets and strengthen trade connections.

The focus on Fujairah adds another dimension to that relationship by bringing the emirate’s institutions and private sector into discussions about Uganda’s economic priorities.

The success of such engagements will ultimately be measured by practical outcomes rather than the number of meetings held.

That makes the forthcoming UAE–Uganda Business Forum particularly important.

It could provide an opportunity for the private sector to move discussions from broad areas of interest towards identifiable projects and commercial partnerships.

Conclusion

Uganda and Fujairah are seeking to strengthen economic and development cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, agriculture, logistics, energy, mineral processing, tourism, finance and technology.

The October 5 meeting between Ambassador Zaake Kibedi and Fujairah Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi provided a high-level platform for discussing how the existing relationship can generate more tangible economic outcomes.

The invitation to the Crown Prince to attend the Fujairah segment of the fifth UAE–Uganda Business Forum on October 29 further highlights the importance Uganda attaches to deepening engagement with Fujairah.

The next stage will be converting diplomatic discussions into commercially viable partnerships and investments.

If that happens, stronger cooperation could contribute to expanded export markets, increased investment, technology transfer, job creation and value addition in Uganda.

For now, the discussions mark another step in Uganda’s efforts to strengthen economic diplomacy and position its businesses and productive sectors to benefit from wider international partnerships.
