The long-awaited modernization of Arua Airport is poised to reshape the economic landscape of Uganda’s West Nile region, with a major infrastructure upgrade expected to boost trade, tourism, and regional connectivity.
Backed by €155.99 million (approximately Shs650 billion) in financing from the African Development Bank Group, the project will transform Arua Airport into an international-standard aviation hub capable of serving both passenger and cargo traffic across the region.
For years, inadequate aviation infrastructure has limited access to markets and investment opportunities in West Nile despite its strategic location near South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Authorities believe the airport expansion will help unlock the region’s economic potential by improving links to domestic and international destinations.
At the heart of the project is the construction of a 3.5-kilometre paved runway designed to accommodate larger aircraft. The airport will also receive a modern passenger terminal with capacity for up to 700,000 travelers annually, alongside a cargo facility capable of handling 25,000 tonnes of freight each year.
Additional developments include new taxiways, aprons, an air traffic control tower, upgraded aviation safety systems, access roads, parking facilities, and other supporting infrastructure required for international operations.
The improved airport is expected to play a key role in supporting farmers, traders, and exporters by reducing transportation challenges and providing faster access to regional and global markets. Businesses across West Nile are anticipated to benefit from improved logistics and lower transport costs.
Tourism is also expected to receive a significant boost as better air access opens the region to more visitors. Officials say enhanced connectivity could attract investment into hospitality, commerce, and other sectors, creating new opportunities for local communities.
The project is projected to directly benefit more than 500,000 residents in Arua City and Arua District, while the wider West Nile region, home to over 3.3 million people, is expected to experience increased economic activity and improved transport services.
Job creation is another major component of the programme. Around 500 direct jobs are expected during construction, with more than 1,400 additional opportunities anticipated in tourism, agriculture, transport, and trade. The initiative will also provide technical skills training for at least 100 young people, including women, in engineering and construction-related fields.
Beyond its economic benefits, the upgraded facility will serve as an alternative international gateway for Uganda during emergencies, strengthening the country’s aviation resilience and reducing reliance on Entebbe International Airport.
Officials view the Arua Airport modernization project as a major step toward positioning West Nile as a regional centre for trade, logistics, and investment while advancing Uganda’s broader infrastructure development goals.
