Police have intensified operations against reckless public transport operators after intercepting three buses transporting passengers to Jinja for weekend recreational activities.
The operation, conducted by Mabira Police along the busy Kampala–Jinja Highway, targeted buses heading to beaches and other leisure destinations.

According to Police, the driver of bus UA 690 CD** was arrested after he was allegedly found operating without a valid Public Service Vehicle (PSV/PMO) permit and carrying passengers in excess of the authorised capacity.
Another driver, operating bus **UBD 912P**, was also arrested after officers established that he was driving with an expired driving licence and an expired insurance policy.
Police said the driver of bus **UA 611 DK** fled the scene immediately after the vehicle was stopped for inspection. Authorities have since directed the registered owner of the bus to produce the driver before police to face appropriate legal action.
The two arrested drivers have already appeared before court to answer charges related to the traffic offences allegedly committed, while investigations into the third case remain ongoing.
Police noted that similar violations have become increasingly common along the Kampala–Jinja and Kampala–Masaka highways, particularly during weekends when large numbers of travellers head to beaches and other entertainment venues.
The force also expressed concern that many passengers continue to board overloaded or non-compliant vehicles, prioritising convenience over safety despite the risks involved.
According to police, such dangerous practices have contributed to numerous road crashes that have claimed lives and left many others with serious injuries.
Authorities have urged motorists, transport operators and passengers to strictly observe traffic regulations, emphasising that road safety is a shared responsibility.
Police warned that enforcement operations against traffic offenders will continue across the country as part of efforts to reduce road crashes and protect the lives of all road users.
