Police have launched investigations into the death of a 10-year-old special needs pupil who drowned during a swimming lesson at Hill Preparatory School in Naguru, Kampala.
The deceased, identified as George Nsawa, reportedly drowned in the school’s swimming pool on July 3 while participating in a supervised swimming session.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire, officers from Jinja Road Police Station responded to the incident and immediately opened an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The child’s body was taken to City Mortuary at Mulago for a post-mortem examination as detectives began gathering evidence.
Investigators are now focusing on whether appropriate safety procedures were followed during the swimming lesson and whether there was any negligence on the part of those responsible for supervising the pupils at the time of the incident.
Police have not disclosed whether any school staff have been questioned or whether criminal liability has been established, saying investigations are still ongoing.
The incident has renewed attention on the importance of strict safety protocols, adequate supervision, and emergency preparedness during school activities, particularly those involving children with special needs.
Authorities say further updates will be provided once investigations are complete.
