Uganda’s political community has been thrown into mourning following the unexpected death of Hellen Nakimuli, the Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala District, who died during what was described as a routine surgical procedure on Sunday.
Nakimuli, a prominent member of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and serving as Shadow Minister for Information, had remained actively engaged in her duties until just hours before her passing. According to opposition leaders, she was coordinating parliamentary activities and communicating with colleagues on the morning of the procedure, giving little indication of the tragedy that would follow.
Her death was formally announced in Parliament by Speaker Anita Annet Among, who conveyed the collective grief of lawmakers. The announcement brought proceedings to a somber pause, reflecting the deep sense of loss felt across the House.
Leaders from both the ruling side and the opposition expressed condolences, highlighting Nakimuli’s dedication to public service. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa described her passing as a significant blow to Parliament, while Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi recounted his final conversation with her, underscoring how sudden and unexpected the loss was.
Beyond Parliament, Nakimuli’s death has resonated widely, particularly within Kalangala District and among supporters of the opposition, where she was regarded as an energetic and committed representative.
As the country awaits official communication on funeral arrangements, tributes continue to pour in, painting a picture of a legislator whose career was cut short at a time when she remained deeply involved in national affairs..
