A bitter dispute over a prime property along Jinja Road has taken a dramatic turn after city businessman Shukla Babubhai Mukesh, popularly known as Shumuk Mukesh, was remanded to Luzira Prison pending further court proceedings.
The case, currently before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court, revolves around ownership and control of a highly valuable piece of land that has become the subject of competing claims involving the deceased owner’s beneficiaries, an alleged purchaser, and Mukesh.
Court records indicate that Mukesh is accused of acquiring an interest in the property through a transaction reportedly worth about Shs250 million, despite the land being valued at several billion shillings. The transaction has since been challenged, particularly following the death of the original owner.
The deceased owner’s heirs are now seeking legal remedies, including the recovery of the land or compensation arising from the disputed deal. The matter has been further complicated by claims from another party said to have legitimately purchased the same property.
Mukesh’s remand follows months of court efforts to secure his appearance. Judicial officers reportedly issued repeated summonses, but his attendance was delayed due to explanations ranging from illness to travel abroad. Following continued non-appearance, the court ordered his arrest, leading to his detention and subsequent remand to Luzira Prison.
The case highlights the increasing number of high-value land disputes making their way through Uganda’s courts, particularly those involving contested ownership, inheritance claims and overlapping transactions.
Legal observers say the outcome could have significant implications for all parties involved, especially the beneficiaries seeking to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs.
Mukesh is expected to return to court on June 15, when prosecutors are anticipated to present additional evidence as investigations continue into the controversial transaction.
