The Israeli Air Force safely landed a helicopter carrying President Isaac Herzog after it struck a flock of birds during a flight on Thursday, June 25, prompting a precautionary emergency landing.
The incident occurred as President Herzog was returning from a memorial ceremony marking Operation Protective Edge at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. He was en route to pay a shiva visit in northern Israel when the helicopter experienced technical issues following the bird strike.
The crew diverted to Palmachim Air Force Base in central Israel, where the aircraft landed safely. No injuries or significant damage were reported.
President Herzog resumed his journey shortly afterward aboard a replacement helicopter, while the affected aircraft was handed over to technical teams for inspection.
The Israel Defense Forces said the incident is under review. Bird strikes remain a well-known aviation hazard, particularly during low-altitude flights, and emergency procedures are designed to ensure passenger safety in such situations.
