A renewed call for unity and accountable leadership dominated discussions as political leaders from Bundibugyo District gathered following the swearing-in of newly elected Members of Parliament ahead of the new parliamentary term.
Speaking during a luncheon hosted by Hon Josephine Babhungi, who begins her third term as Woman MP, the Deputy RCC for Fort Portal City, Businge Emmanuel, challenged leaders to put aside political and cultural differences and focus on improving the livelihoods of the people.
Mr Businge applauded residents of Bundibugyo for their continued support towards the ruling NRM government and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, whom he credited for promoting peace and creating an environment for social and economic transformation.
He reminded legislators of their oversight responsibilities, particularly in monitoring public expenditure and ensuring value for money in government projects. Emphasising the President’s anti-corruption message and policy of “zero tolerance” for misuse of public resources, the Deputy RCC urged MPs to closely supervise road maintenance funds to guarantee better infrastructure and easier market access for communities.
The meeting also highlighted the need for reconciliation in a district that has for years experienced political tensions linked to ethnicity and cultural institution affiliations. Leaders were encouraged to embrace dialogue, consultation, and inclusive leadership as a way of fostering lasting peace and development.
The event attracted several prominent leaders, including Hon Harriet Ntabazi and Hon Taban Kibanzanga, in what participants described as a rare and symbolic display of unity among Bundibugyo’s political leadership.
