KAMPALA —Hon. Hajjat Aminah Mukalazi joined Finance Minister Henry Musasizi and Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) Director General Robert Mukiza for a working visit to Steel & Tube Industries Limited at Namanve Industrial Park.
The visit brought together senior government officials and the management of one of Uganda’s industrial manufacturers, providing an opportunity to engage on manufacturing and investment activities within the industrial park.
The delegation included Musasizi, Mukalazi and Mukiza, who visited the company’s facilities as part of their engagement with Uganda’s industrial sector.
#Focus on manufacturing
The visit to Steel & Tube Industries comes against the backdrop of government efforts to promote local manufacturing and strengthen Uganda’s industrial base.
Namanve Industrial Park, located in Mukono District, is one of Uganda’s key industrial centres and hosts businesses involved in manufacturing, processing and other economic activities.
Industrial parks form part of Uganda’s strategy to create an environment where investors can establish businesses, access infrastructure and contribute to employment and economic activity.
Engagements between government officials and manufacturers provide an opportunity to understand the opportunities and challenges facing businesses operating in the country.
#Government engagement with investors
The presence of the Finance Minister and the UIA leadership underscored the importance of government-industry engagement.
The Uganda Investment Authority is responsible for promoting and facilitating investment in Uganda, including supporting investors and encouraging the development of industrial and commercial enterprises.
Such visits can enable government officials to gain first-hand information about the operations of companies and the wider business environment.
For manufacturers, direct engagement with policymakers can also provide an avenue to raise issues affecting production, investment and business expansion.
#Steel and Tube Industries
Steel & Tube Industries Limited is involved in the manufacture and supply of steel products for Uganda’s construction and other sectors.
The steel industry plays an important role in supporting construction, infrastructure development and other economic activities because steel products are used in buildings, factories, roads and other projects.
Strengthening domestic production can also contribute to reducing reliance on imported products, although the competitiveness of local manufacturers depends on factors including production costs, energy, access to finance, technology and market demand.
The company’s operations at Namanve therefore form part of Uganda’s broader industrial ecosystem.
#Importance of Namanve Industrial Park
Namanve Industrial Park has become an important centre for Uganda’s manufacturing ambitions.
Industrial parks are intended to provide investors with planned locations and infrastructure that can support business operations.
The concentration of industries in such areas can also create opportunities for suppliers, transport operators, service providers and workers.
As more manufacturing enterprises operate within industrial parks, their combined activities can contribute to Uganda’s industrialisation and economic growth.
#Industrialisation and employment
Government has consistently identified industrialisation as an important pathway to economic transformation.
Manufacturing companies create direct employment while also supporting indirect jobs through supply chains and related services.
For young Ugandans, the expansion of manufacturing can create opportunities in technical fields, engineering, administration, logistics and other areas.
The growth of local industries can also help develop skills and provide markets for locally produced goods.
## Need for continued investment
The visit also highlights the importance of continued investment in Uganda’s manufacturing sector.
Manufacturers require a stable business environment to make long-term investment decisions.
Reliable infrastructure, access to electricity, efficient transportation networks and predictable regulatory processes can influence the ability of industries to expand.
Government-industry consultations can therefore help identify areas where policy or infrastructure improvements may support greater production.
#Local production and economic development
Expanding local production has wider implications for Uganda’s economy.
When more goods are produced domestically, local industries can contribute to employment, tax revenues and the development of technical skills.
Domestic manufacturing can also support other sectors by providing locally produced inputs.
For example, steel products are important to the construction industry, meaning developments in steel manufacturing can have effects across the wider economy.
However, manufacturers must remain competitive in both local and regional markets to sustain long-term growth.
#Role of investment facilitation
UIA’s participation in the visit reflects the authority’s role in connecting investors with government and supporting investment activities.
Investment facilitation can involve helping businesses navigate government processes and identifying opportunities for expansion.
Regular engagement with existing investors is also important because retaining and expanding established businesses can contribute to economic development alongside attracting new investors.
#Looking ahead
The government faces the challenge of translating investment into sustainable production, employment and broader economic benefits.
Visits such as the one to Steel & Tube Industries can help policymakers better understand the practical realities faced by manufacturers.
They also provide an opportunity for government and the private sector to maintain dialogue on policies that can strengthen Uganda’s industrial competitiveness.
For companies operating at Namanve and other industrial parks, continued collaboration with government will remain important as they seek to expand production and access wider markets.
#Conclusion
Hon. Hajjat Aminah Mukalazi’s working visit with Finance Minister Henry Musasizi and UIA Director General Robert Mukiza to Steel & Tube Industries Limited at Namanve Industrial Park highlights the continued engagement between government and Uganda’s manufacturing sector.
The visit provided an opportunity for senior officials to interact with an industrial manufacturer and underscored the role of investment, manufacturing and industrial parks in Uganda’s economic development.
As Uganda pursues industrialisation, stronger cooperation between government and the private sector will remain important in addressing challenges facing manufacturers, supporting investment and creating opportunities for employment and economic growth.
