The meeting focused on ways the private sector can continue contributing to economic growth and development in the two neighbouring East African countries.
President Museveni said the discussions centred on investment opportunities and the importance of continued private-sector participation in advancing the economies of Uganda and Tanzania.
“I welcomed my son from Tanzania, Abdul Halim Hafidh Ameir and his delegation at State House Entebbe,” President Museveni said.
“We discussed investment opportunities and how the private sector can continue contributing to the growth and development of our two countries,” he added.
#Focus on investment
The meeting highlighted the importance of investment as a driver of economic growth and job creation in East Africa.
Uganda and Tanzania share historical, cultural and economic ties and are members of the East African Community (EAC), which seeks to promote regional integration and cooperation among member states.
Investment between the two countries has the potential to support trade, expand businesses and create opportunities for private-sector actors.
The discussions at State House therefore placed emphasis on identifying opportunities through which investors can participate in the development of both economies.
#Private sector role
President Museveni’s remarks also underscored the role of the private sector in supporting national development.
Businesses and investors contribute to economic activity through investment, production, trade and employment, while also expanding the tax base and supporting the growth of various industries.
The President said continued private-sector participation would be important in advancing the development objectives of Uganda and Tanzania.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss how investment opportunities can be leveraged to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
#Uganda-Tanzania economic relations
Uganda and Tanzania have maintained close relations, with cooperation extending across trade, investment, transport, energy and other areas of mutual interest.
The two countries’ geographical proximity also creates opportunities for increased movement of goods, services and capital.
Regional infrastructure projects and improved connectivity have further strengthened prospects for cross-border trade and investment.
For Uganda, stronger economic engagement with Tanzania provides access to one of the country’s important regional markets and transport corridors.
Tanzania, meanwhile, remains strategically important to Uganda because of its position on the Indian Ocean and its role in regional trade.
#Regional integration
The meeting comes within the broader context of East African integration, where governments continue to encourage investment and cross-border business activity.
The EAC framework is intended to facilitate the movement of goods, services, people and capital among partner states.
Private-sector investment is considered an important component of this integration because businesses can establish operations, partnerships and supply chains that operate across national borders.
Such investments can contribute to industrialisation and economic transformation when supported by appropriate policies and infrastructure.
#Investment and development
President Museveni has consistently emphasised the importance of investment and private-sector participation in Uganda’s economic transformation.
The Government has also sought to attract both domestic and foreign investors into sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, energy, tourism and services.
Investment can help increase production capacity, create employment opportunities and introduce new technologies and skills.
The discussions with the Tanzanian delegation therefore reflect the broader objective of using private investment to support economic growth.
#Strengthening bilateral ties
Beyond individual investment opportunities, engagements between leaders and business representatives can contribute to strengthening bilateral relations.
Uganda and Tanzania have a long history of cooperation, and economic partnerships can complement government-to-government relations.
By encouraging investors from both countries to explore opportunities across borders, the two nations can potentially deepen commercial links and increase private-sector cooperation.
#Conclusion
President Museveni’s meeting with Abdul Halim Hafidh Ameir and his delegation at State House Entebbe has highlighted the role of investment and the private sector in strengthening economic cooperation between Uganda and Tanzania.
The discussions focused on investment opportunities and how businesses can contribute to growth and development in both countries.
As East African countries pursue greater regional integration, sustained private-sector engagement is expected to remain an important part of efforts to expand trade, investment and economic opportunities across the region.
