HARARE, Zimbabwe — The Roman Catholic Church in Zimbabwe is mourning the death of Father Regis Chikuni, a senior priest of the Archdiocese of Harare who had been reported missing before his body was found at the mortuary of Parirenyatwa Hospital.
The death was confirmed by Father Ephraim Murwira, the secretary to the Archbishop of Harare, in a communication to priests, religious leaders and lay members of the archdiocese.
The circumstances surrounding the priest’s death have not been publicly detailed, and no cause of death was given in the statements cited by local media. The church has also not publicly indicated whether police investigations are under way or whether foul play is suspected.
Father Chikuni’s death comes days after the Archdiocese appealed for information about his whereabouts and expressed concern for his welfare.
Priest reported missing
The 58-year-old priest was reported missing after his whereabouts became unknown, prompting the Archdiocese of Harare to alert members of the church.
According to reports, the church issued a notice dated September 5, 2026, informing parishioners that it was concerned about Father Chikuni’s whereabouts and well-being.
The appeal came as church officials attempted to establish contact with the priest and determine where he was.
The disappearance generated concern among members of the Catholic community, particularly because Father Chikuni was described as a senior priest within the Archdiocese of Harare.
His eventual discovery at Parirenyatwa Hospital brought an end to the search, but also left members of the church grieving and seeking answers about what happened to him.
Archdiocese confirms death
Father Murwira announced the priest’s death in a message addressed to priests, religious and lay people within the archdiocese.
The church described Father Chikuni’s death as a profound loss and asked members of the Catholic community to respond with prayer and support for one another.
“It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Father Regis Chikuni,” the statement said, according to reports.
The statement said the priest had been found deceased at the mortuary of Parirenyatwa Hospital.
The church also remembered Father Chikuni for his pastoral service and his contribution to the wider Catholic community.
“His dedication to his pastoral duties and the impact he had on our community will forever be cherished in our hearts,” the statement said.
The Archdiocese urged Catholics to come together in prayer as they mourned the priest.
It also said details concerning funeral arrangements would be communicated later.
Cause of death remains unclear
While the discovery of Father Chikuni’s body has been confirmed by the church, publicly available reports do not provide a verified explanation of how he died.
There has been no confirmed statement in the reports reviewed indicating that the priest was murdered, suffered an illness or died in an accident.
Such details are important because the fact that a missing person is subsequently found dead does not, by itself, establish the circumstances or cause of death.
Until an official medical, police or church statement provides further information, claims about the circumstances of Father Chikuni’s death should therefore be treated cautiously.
A post-mortem examination, where applicable, could help establish the medical cause of death. However, no post-mortem findings have been publicly reported in the sources reviewed for this article.
Parirenyatwa Hospital
Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals is one of Zimbabwe’s major public health institutions and is located in Harare.
The hospital has long served as a major referral centre for patients from Harare and other parts of the country.
The reported discovery of Father Chikuni’s body at the hospital mortuary has consequently become a central part of the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death.
However, the available reports do not establish when the priest died, how long his body had been at the hospital or the circumstances under which he was taken to the institution.
Those questions remain important to establishing a complete timeline of events.
A loss for Zimbabwe’s Catholic community
Father Chikuni’s death has affected not only members of the Archdiocese of Harare but also the wider Catholic community.
Catholic priests occupy an important role in the religious and social life of communities across Zimbabwe, serving in parishes, celebrating Mass, providing pastoral guidance and supporting families during significant moments in their lives.
The Archdiocese’s message emphasised Father Chikuni’s pastoral contribution and encouraged members to remember his service.
For the church, the death has therefore been framed not only as the loss of an individual priest but also as the passing of a member of its religious family.
The Archdiocese invoked Christian belief in the resurrection as a source of comfort for mourners.
The church said it took comfort in the belief that Father Chikuni had “returned to the loving embrace of our Lord,” according to the statement reported by local media.
Calls for prayer
Following confirmation of the death, the Archdiocese called on members of the Catholic community to unite in prayer.
The appeal reflects the central role of prayer and communal mourning in Catholic responses to the death of clergy and other members of the church.
The Archdiocese also appealed for support as priests, religious leaders, parishioners and relatives come to terms with the loss.
The church said further information about the funeral would be communicated in due course.
Importance of official information
The circumstances of Father Chikuni’s disappearance and death underline the importance of relying on official information when reporting cases involving missing people.
Such cases can quickly generate speculation, particularly when a person is later found dead.
In Father Chikuni’s case, the confirmed facts currently available are that he was a priest of the Archdiocese of Harare, that his whereabouts had become unknown, that the church appealed for information about him, and that his body was later found at the mortuary of Parirenyatwa Hospital.
The cause and circumstances of death remain unclear based on the publicly available reports reviewed.
Any subsequent statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police, medical authorities or the Archdiocese could provide additional information and clarify unanswered questions.
Funeral arrangements awaited
The Archdiocese of Harare has said details concerning Father Chikuni’s funeral arrangements will be communicated later.
Funeral arrangements for Catholic clergy generally involve church authorities, fellow priests, religious communities, family members and parishioners, although the specific arrangements for Father Chikuni had not been announced in the reports reviewed.
Until those arrangements are released, the church has urged members to focus on prayer and remembrance.
Father Chikuni’s death leaves the Archdiocese of Harare mourning a priest whose ministry was remembered by church authorities for its contribution to the Catholic community.
For now, the focus remains on grieving his death while awaiting further verified information about the circumstances surrounding his final days.
The church’s confirmation brings an end to the uncertainty over Father Chikuni’s whereabouts, but significant questions about the circumstances of his death remain unanswered. Those questions will require clarification from the relevant authorities rather than speculation.
As the Archdiocese prepares to communicate funeral arrangements, Catholic faithful in Zimbabwe are being called upon to remember Father Chikuni’s pastoral service and to support one another during the period of mourning.
