Former Greece international Marios Oikonomou has tragically died at the age of 33, nine days after suffering severe injuries in a motorcycle accident in northwestern Greece.
The former defender, who represented clubs across Greece, Italy, and Denmark during a distinguished professional career, had been fighting for his life since the crash on May 23 in Ioannina. Despite undergoing emergency surgery and receiving intensive medical care, Oikonomou succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
The accident occurred when Oikonomou was involved in a collision with a vehicle driven by a 63-year-old motorist. Emergency services rushed to the scene before transporting him to Ioannina University Hospital with critical head injuries. Doctors performed a decompressive craniectomy, a procedure used to relieve dangerous pressure on the brain, before placing him in intensive care.
Tributes have poured in from across the football world following news of his passing. Former club PAS Giannina led the condolences, describing Oikonomou as a respected figure who was admired for both his professionalism and his character.
Throughout his career, Oikonomou built a reputation as a reliable central defender, featuring for prominent clubs including Sampdoria, Bologna, Cagliari, Bari, SPAL, AEK Athens, and Copenhagen. He also earned six appearances for the Greek national team between 2016 and 2018.
Greek authorities have confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision remain ongoing.
Oikonomou’s death has sent shockwaves through the football community, with former teammates, clubs, and supporters remembering a player whose career spanned some of Europe’s most competitive leagues and whose life ended far too soon.
