KAMPALA, Monday — The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has appointed Brig Gen Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru as the Acting Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC), promoting him to the acting rank of Major General with immediate effect.
The appointment, announced on Monday, marks a leadership transition within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces’ elite unit, with Acting Maj Gen Nyakikuru taking over from Maj Gen David Mugisha.
According to a statement issued by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Maj Gen Mugisha will begin preparations to attend the National Defence College (NDC) abroad in the coming months for advanced strategic security studies.
“The Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations (SPA/SO), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has appointed Brig Gen Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru as the Acting Commander of the Special Forces Command. Brig Gen Nyakikuru has also been granted the acting rank of Major General,” the UPDF said.
The military said both the appointment and promotion take effect immediately.
The UPDF commended Maj Gen Mugisha for what it described as his distinguished service during his tenure as commander of the Special Forces Command and wished him success in his forthcoming studies.
It also congratulated Acting Maj Gen Nyakikuru on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the country’s elite special operations force.
The Special Forces Command is one of the UPDF’s specialised formations and is mandated to protect the President and the First Family, secure strategic national installations, and conduct specialised military operations.
