Talks continue in Tooro Kingdom as the royal family disputes the selection of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as successor to the late King Oyo.
FORTPORTAL-The succession crisis in Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom has deepened as members of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV’s family challenge the selection of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the next Omukama.
The dispute comes days after Oyo, who became king at the age of three in 1995, died aged 34. His death has triggered a disagreement over who should inherit the throne, with the royal clan backing Kijanangoma while members of Oyo’s immediate family point to a 2022 will that they say provides for the late monarch’s biological son to become king.

The succession dispute has unfolded as Tooro prepares to bury the late monarch, placing additional pressure on the royal family and clan leaders to find a solution.
Ugandan authorities have reportedly joined discussions aimed at resolving the impasse, while the royal family is also pursuing legal avenues to challenge the succession process.
The central question is whether the selection of Kijanangoma can proceed despite objections from the late king’s mother and sister, and whether the alleged son named in Oyo’s will can be established as a legitimate successor under Tooro’s traditional succession arrangements.
The dispute has attracted national and international attention because of the importance of the Tooro monarchy as a cultural institution and the unusual circumstances surrounding the succession.

As talks continue, attention is now focused on whether the royal family and the Babiito clan can reach an agreement that allows the late king’s burial and the kingdom’s transition to proceed without further division.
For Tooro, the immediate challenge is not simply choosing a new monarch but ensuring that the process is accepted by the competing sides and does not deepen divisions within the royal family and the wider kingdom.
